Profile


Background :- The Department of Assamese has been an inherent part of Raha College since the latter's establishment in the year 1964. At the very beginning the department started with the subject MIL (Assamese) and ASL (Assamese Second Language). The UG Major course was started in the year 1981-82. At present the department offers Higher Secondary and Degree courses as per prescribed syllabus of AHSEC and Gauhati University respectively. The present strength of the department in terms of students in Higher Secondary and Degree Course (including Major and General course) classes is around twelve hundred.

                         The department has been devoting itself towards the upliftment of students in the Assamese Language, literature and culture since its inception; so that students can prepare themselves for doing something for the betterment of the Assamese language, literature, and culture, also so that they can secure good establishment and through their learning they can make them competent enough to face new challenges in life.

                             The department of Assamese has an own departmental library. There are about 200 numbers of books in the departmental library which includes text books, reference books and magazines. Besides an own classroom there is a museum in the department. A departmental Wall Magazine is published yearly by the students. The department also has a monetary fund viz. 'Poor Fund' which offers helping hand to the very poor needy students in different fronts.

                             At present the department has five teachers. They are very helpful and are always available for personal guidance to the students. The teachers are involved in research works, various extension works like lecture Seminar, Workshop, Poet Meet and also Educational Tour with the students in different districts of Assam.

                              Former faculties of the department were very progressive, optimistic. Under the able guidance of Former HoD of the department Late Dr. Narendranath Bordoloi, the students of Raha College were able to claim gold medal in the Inter-University Youth Festival in folk dance on many occasions. Likewise another former HoD Sri Keshab Chandra Bhagawati is an eminent Assamese Poet. Some of the ex-students were very talented. Ex-student Jugal Lochan Das, noted children literary icon of the state has been awarded Sahitya Academy for his Assamese Novel 'Xonbali Bagisar Bhoot' in the year 2018. Ex-student Rakib Uddin Ahmed (known as Nilabh Sourabh) is one of the renowned contemporary poets in Assam. It is too worth mentioning that present HoD, Dr. Rajashri Bora was awarded with the 'Puspa Devi Jalan Literary Award, 2020' for the literary work 'Bhasa-Sahitya Aru Samaj-Sanskritir Jilingoni'. We, the faculty members of the Assamese Department are in an arrangement to introduce the Post Graduate courses in the forthcoming future.
