Profile


       The Department of English, Raha College was established on July 28, 1964, the day in which the college was formally established. Since its beginning, the department has been engaged in imparting quality education to the rural students of Raha and its adjoining areas. The Honors course in English was introduced in 2002 in order to give students comprehensive access to English literature and language. The overall response and success rate of students in the department are satisfactory. Prominent faculty members who have served in the department of English, Raha College and have retired or joined other institutes are – Mr. Hema Kanta Hazarika, Mrs. Minakshi Bhuyan, Mrs. Inchi Bhuyan, Mrs. Minu Prava Laskar, Ms. Saswati Bora. At present, there are three permanent faculty members and one contractual teacher in the department. The permanent faculty members include the following teachers:

  1. Mr. Prithiraj Barkakoty.
  2. Dr. Karabi Goswami.
  3.  Mrs. Kobideepa Handique

         The department has the autonomy to make teaching plans as per the syllabus prescribed by Gauhati University and also to select candidates of the Honors course. The syllabus of the Honors course (ENG-HC & ENG-HE) as per CBCS guidelines offers a comprehensive and exhaustive foray into English and world literature. Papers relating to Indian classical literature, European classical literature, Indian writing in English, British poetry and drama, American literature, post-colonial literature, popular literature, literature of Indian diaspora, literary criticism and literary theory, science fiction and detective literature, partition literature, travel writing, etc, are included in the course.

             English Compulsory Course (ENG-CC) for Regular students include writings and poetry from Indian, British, American and diasporic writers. The Generic Elective Course (ENG-RC) also offers a broad and comprehensive intake into Modern Indian literatures, women writings from the Indian subcontinent, British literature, language and linguistics, and culture as well. The Ability Enhancement Course in English Communication (AE) for degree students stresses on effective English communication skills. In semester 3 and semester 4, the department offers Alternative English course (ALT-CC). The department also offers Skill Enhancement Course in 3rd and th semesters (ENG-SE) on creative writing and translation. In addition, the English department is also taking degree classes in Science and Commerce stream of the degree course as well as taking classes in the Higher Secondary section (both compulsory English and Alternative English).

                The department has a wall magazine named “Vista” at present for providing facilities for creative and critical literary development of the students. The department also encourages the teachers and students to participate in seminars, conferences, workshops and faculty Development Programs (FDP).
